Outdated Fashion Rules to Break

Outdated Fashion Rules to Break

A quick Google search of “fashion rules” produces dozens of articles and videos about style rules that everyone should supposedly follow. Fashion, however, is a form of personal expression. Your clothes tell the world who you are, so why let some silly “rules” dictate your personal style? Out of the dozens of outdated fashion rules, this article covers four rules to break ASAP.

Rule 1: Do not wear white after Labor Day

Traditionally, the end of summer marked the end of wearing white clothing. Even though white is associated with summer and warm weather, there is no reason why this color cannot transition into fall and winter. I mean, winter snow is white, so why is wearing that color in the colder months so taboo? One item of clothing you can incorporate into your outfits year-round is a pair of white jeans. For winter looks, perhaps you opt for a white puffer jacket instead of classic black.

Rule 2: Do not mix prints

This rule, among others, gives off the same energy as the TLC show What Not to Wear. In the show, “fashion victims” are stripped of their unique clothing and put into gray business clothes. Mixing prints isn’t tacky, it’s innovative. Choosing which colors and patterns to mix takes talent. Even high fashion brands are ditching this outdated no mixing prints rule. Dolce and Gabbana, for example, loves to mix and match colorful prints and patterns.

Rule 3: Never mix gold and silver jewelry

This rule is more adhered to than the others mentioned in this article, as many individuals still hold the opinion that it is tacky to mix gold and silver jewelry. Perhaps not every look would benefit from multiple metals, yet mixing gold and silver has lots of benefits. Combining metals creates a cool, effortless vibe. Mixing gold and silver also allows you to display all your favorite jewelry pieces at once. If your favorite bracelet is silver and your favorite earrings are gold hoops, wear them both at the same time! Fashion is about expression, not about constricting your style to fit certain “rules.”

Rule 4: Sneakers should not be paired with dresses

Whoever came up with this rule clearly never listened to Demi Lovato’s song La La Land where they exclaim, “Who said I can’t wear my Converse with my dress?” Lovato was onto something with these lyrics. Sneakers are the perfect shoe for keeping an outfit on the casual side. Sneakers and dresses are also the perfect combination if you walk a lot. Sneakers entail more than just your old gym shoes. Big designers like Gucci, Chanel, and Balenciaga all sell their own take on sneakers.

It’s time to stop listening to outdated fashion rules. If you prefer wearing darker colors in the winter or only wearing gold jewelry, that’s totally okay! Remember, however, that you are in control of your own style, not anyone else and especially not some ancient “fashion rules.” Your outfits tell the story of who you are, so make sure you’re the author.
