Sophia Alexa On About Her New Single "Hit and Run" And Her Music Evolution

“Hit and Run” is a single that is beautifully written by artist Sophia Alexa. She captures emotions that are so eloquently written and put into her song for her audience to hear. Sophia beguiles again with her dreamy brand of indie -pop. In conversation with Clique, Sophia Alexa shares that ‘Hit and Run' is a special track to her, she wrote it after she noticed herself feeling the need to escape every time she got too close to someone. She was afraid of feeling trapped or attached even if the relationship was positive. The escape felt like a defense mechanism and writing this song was a way to summarize that feeling.

CLIQUE: What can you tell us about your new single “Hit and Run”?

SOPHIA: ‘Hit and Run' is a special track to me, I wrote it after I noticed myself feeling the need to escape every time I got too close to someone. I was afraid of feeling trapped or attached even if the relationship was positive. The escape felt like a defense mechanism and writing this song was a way to summarize that feeling. In the process of writing it, I wasn’t sure if the title was too dark, so contrasting it with more uptempo drums was a great way to hide the reality of the lyrics.

CLIQUE: How do you come up with your initial ideas for songs?

SOPHIA: I usually start with a 15-minute rant either in my notes app or in my journal about how I’m feeling in the moment. Then I sift through and see if there is any word or sentence that sticks or just a general emotion I can tap into. It helps me narrow down on a concept and allows me to come from an honest place. Usually, chords and melodies follow!

“I’ve come to a place where I feel like my music most resembles who I am at this point.”

CLIQUE: How has your music evolved over the years?

SOPHIA: Over the years I’ve experimented a lot with my sound. It took me a while to figure out what I like in terms of production, and finding the right balance between organic and pop. I’ve come to a place where I feel like my music most resembles who I am at this point.

CLIQUE: You also came out with a music video for “Hit and Run”, what was the process of making the video like?

SOPHIA: Very cold, I had to stand outside in a dress for quite a few hours but it was worth it! We started filming once it got dark in various fields, streets and eventually on top of a hill overlooking Bristol.

CLIQUE: Did you go into the music video knowing the exact aesthetic you were going for?

SOPHIA: Before making the music video, I had one of my favourite movies as a reference called ‘Lost In Translation’. It had the sort of nighttime moody feel I wanted for this video. I also love a more retro type of aesthetic, so there was a VHS style edit, and scenes were filmed with an older film camera. I’m really happy with how it turned out :)

CLIQUE: Is there a specific feeling that you hope those who listen to your music feel when they listen to this specific song?

SOPHIA: I hope when people listen to ‘Hit and Run’, they can feel some relatability to the fear of commitment and a feeling of detachment and independence.

CLIQUE: What in your life inspires you to make music?

SOPHIA: When I’m surrounded by other forms of creativity, whether visual art, literature, poetry or listening to my favourite albums, I get really excited and inspired because I’m just soaking up my surroundings.

“Once I realized how much I needed to write, I knew it would always be a consistent part of my life.”

CLIQUE: When did you start making music and realize you wanted to continue doing it?

SOPHIA: When I was 12 I started writing songs because I was very shy, and a lot of the time I was the new kid at school. So after school, I would come home and spend most of my time playing my guitar and writing. Once I realized how much I needed to write, I knew it would always be a consistent part of my life.

CLIQUE: Do you have anyone you hope to collaborate with in the future?

SOPHIA: My dream would be either Taylor Swift or Joni Mitchell.

CLIQUE: What is one thing that you still hope to achieve in your career?

SOPHIA: I would love to create a concept album that I’ve taken the time to create and be proud of!
